Alessandro De Medici, also called “Il Moro” (“The Moor”), was the first African duke of Florence and the last member of the Medicis to rule. Il Moro was also the first one to take on his title of duke through his ancestry. Medici was born in the Italian city of Urbino in 1510. His mother was an enslaved African named Simonetta who had been freed. Alessandro’s paternity is uncertain.
