Kimani Maruge (1920-2009)

Kimani Maruge was an 84 year old villager and a Mau Mau veteran, who decides to enroll in school in 2004 for the first time to educate himself after hearing an announcement on the radio about the Kenyan government’s offering of free primary school education to “all”. He became the oldest primary school pupil in the world. A year later, he was elected head boy of his school. In September 2005, Maruge boarded a plane for the first time in his life, and headed to New York City to address the UN Millennium Development Summit on the importance of free primary.
